The premise of play therapy is to meet children where they are and to speak their language. Technology is the modern facilitator of that language. Meeting a child in a digital world is comfortable and familiar to them and aids in strengthening rapport and gaining greater insight into their world. Ultimately, while the work is slightly modified virtually, the therapeutic effects of having a space to process all that is presently occurring for them is invaluable. When used as an adjunct to in-person therapy when meeting in person is not possible, it allows children to maintain a sense of normalcy during uncertainty which aids in resilience and improved mental health overall.
How does Tele Play Therapy Work? Your therapist will meet with you and your child on an easy-to-use HIPPA compliant platform already integrated into your client portal.
You will have your child set up at home with some art materials, toys, games, and/or worksheets that your therapist will share with you to print for your child.
Your therapist will guide your child in directive therapeutic games, share effective videos on emotional regulation and exploration, and follow your child's lead to help them explore their emotions and challenging behaviors. You may be involved in the session to help with technology or your child may be set up on his/her own per your treatment plan.
Your therapist may engage with you in parent-child sessions, helping you to learn how to attune to your child through play to create stronger connections, work through difficult moments in your routine, and facilitate more mindfulness and joy together.
Is Tele Play Therapy Effective? Research shows that tele therapy can be just effective as in person sessions! However your therapist will work with you and your family's individual needs to assess if tele play therapy can be beneficial in supporting your needs.
